History
Virginia Axline establishished a non directive approach to child therapy creating eight principles which underpin most of our play therapy work today.
Violet Oaklander intergrated Gestalt theory along with a tool-kit of creative arts media to work as a child therapist.
In 1986, Mark Barnes combined Axline's principles with Oaklander's tool-kit and the beginning of play therapy was created.
In 2000 as a response to children failing to meet their full academic potential because of emotional, social behaviour and/or mental health problems, Monika Jephcott and Jeff Thomas founded The United Kingdom Society for Play and Creative Arts Therapies Ltd (PTUK).
This professional organisation provides post graduate training for practitioners in using therapeutic play to help children with emotional literacy, behaviour and mental health problems. PTUK is regulated by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) for Health and Social Care.
